London Stansted Airport is looking to improve its baggage handling systems as a way of reducing airport delays with the help of maintenance monitoring equipment provider Samotics.
The Netherlands-based company, which describes itself as a “leading provider of real-time actionable insights to eliminate industrial energy waste and unplanned downtime”, will work with the airport to use its SAM4 Health solution to deliver constant insights on the baggage handling systems.
Paul Marshall, reliability engineer at London Stansted, said: “At London Stansted Airport, we are constantly striving to enhance the passenger experience.
“By leveraging Samotics’ SAM4 system, which has already been proven at a leading international airport, we can increase the reliability of our baggage handling system to significantly reduce delays and impact on travellers.”
Samotics’ SAM4 system will allow maintenance teams to be proactive in addressing developing faults and thus preventing unexpected breakdowns with the company claiming that over 90% of potential faults can be prevented by its system up to five months in advance.

CEO Jasper Hoogeweegan said his company was looking forward to supporting London Stansted with its aims: “Our technology helps airports address a fundamental challenge by identifying and resolving developing faults before they happen. With less downtime, passengers and airlines benefit from reduced delays and a smoother travelling experience.”
Earlier this year, the UK Government outlined steps that could be taken by the aviation industry to avoid the significant delays and disruption that was seen in ground handling services in 2022 as the industry opened up again after pandemic closures, including issues with baggage handling.
Stansted’s investment into improving its systems and infrastructure has also included the first resurfacing of its single runway since 2006, which began in January of this year.
