US-based carbon-recycling company LanzaTech Global has announced a partnership with the UAE’s Tadweer with the aims of forming a waste-to-SAF feasibility study to increase SAF production.
LanzaTech’s technology will be placed in Tadweer’s facilities across the Middle East. The facility will then transform solid waste streams into synthesis gas consisting of CO, CO2 and H2.
According to the companies, the process will occur via a gasification unit licensed by sustainable technology solutions provider NextChem, part of MAIRE Group.
The Nasdaq-listed company has claimed that 350,000 tonnes of hard-to-recycle waste may be transformed into 200,000 tonnes of ethanol per year, producing 120,000 tonnes of SAF annually.
Ali Al-Dhaheri, Managing Director and CEO of Tadweer, emphasised the possibilities of its waste to SAF solution.

Dhaheri said: “The waste management industry has the potential to reduce almost 1.8 gigatonnes of emitted CO2 per year, an indicator of its critical role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The partnership is reported to contribute to the UAE’s National SAF road map, aligning with global environmental Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) standards.
This agreement follows a partnership set in February 2023 which featured a collaboration to develop a large-scale conversion plant for transforming solid municipal waste into SAF.
Jennifer Holmgren, Chief Executive Officer of LanzaTech, added: “Recycling municipal solid waste, rather than letting it pile up in landfills, offers incredible potential to produce sustainable aviation fuel at scale and reduce air travel’s carbon footprint.
“This solution creates an alternative, lower carbon supply chain. With LanzaTech’s technology in Tadweer’s facilities, this project is an opportunity to address the climate crisis on two fronts simultaneously and keep virgin fossil fuels in the ground.”
Extending on previous efforts in waste-to-SAF production LanzaTech aims to “transform pollution”. In April 2022, LanzaTech partnered with Sekisui Chemical announcing the completion of a waste-to-ethanol demonstration plant in Kuji City, Japan.
SAF production has increased in recent times, witnessing a 300k gallon SAF agreement between Shell and Emirates. Alongside this, IATA predicts global SAF production to triple by 2024.
