United undertook a number of projects related to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) during the research period, including forming a joint-venture with Tallgrass, and Green Plains to invest up to $50m in Blue Blade Energy, for the development of ethanol as feedstock.

The company also committed to the procurement of up to 52.5 million gallons of SAF from Neste, initially for its flights at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The deal makes it the first US carrier to enter into an international purchase agreement for SAF.

In addition the company also invested $5m in Viridos an algae-based fuel producer, through its recently announced UAV Sustainable Flight Fund.

The company also committed to the development of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, with a partnership with Archer Aviation to realize the first air taxi route in Chicago between O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Vertiport Chicago as part of the urban air mobility (UAM) network development.

United also has unveiled what it claims to be its largest Inflight Training Centre in Houston, US. The 56,000ft² facility houses new classrooms, additional cabin and door trainers, and an advanced aquatic centre featuring a 125,000gal pool.
