Noida International Greenfield Airport, also known as Delhi Noida International Airport or Jewar Airport, is proposed to be built in Jewar, Greater Noida, in Uttar Pradesh, India.
The proposed airport will help relieve congestion at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) and serve the fast-developing industrial region between Delhi and Agra.
It is expected to increase demand for commercial and residential projects and hotels in the region, while also boosting the real-estate sector.
The first phase of construction of the airport project will involve capital investment to the tune of approximately $730.5m.
Construction of the project is expected to start in 2021 and the airport will be developed under a public-private partnership model (PPP). The land acquisition for the airport has been funded by the State government and Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA). YEIDA is the nodal authority for the proposed airport.
Need for the new airport
IGI airport is anticipated to reach its saturation point by 2024, with the passenger count expected to cross the 100 million mark in the coming years.
Growing demand and passenger traffic create the need for a second airport in NCR. The proposed airport will handle 80 million passengers upon its commissioning in 2022-23.
Jewar International Airport design and features
The Noida International Greenfield Airport is located approximately 72km away from Indira Gandhi International Airport, and 40km from Noida, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad.
Located around 80km south of Delhi, the new airport will be connected to tourist destinations such as Vrindavan, Mathura and Agra by Yamuna Expressway.
Spanning 5,000ha, the new international airport will be built with up to eight runways, making it the biggest airport in the country. The design proposal includes an internal landscape courtyard deep within the terminal plan for improved ventilation and daylight.
The exterior design will include a new landscaped forecourt, providing a regional destination for the public, staff, and passengers. Designed with Swiss technology, the Jewar airport will serve the Western UP pockets and the neighbouring states of Haryana, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan.
The new airport aims to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold standard certification and carbon net-zero operations.
Construction
The airport will be built in four phases. The first phase will include two runways and allow the diversion of a portion of the IGI airport’s passenger traffic to the new international airport at Jewar.
The Noida International Greenfield Airport will be able to handle 12 million passengers once the first phase is operational by 2022-23. The second phase will include two additional runways to increase the airport’s traffic handling capacity, while the remaining runways will be developed in subsequent phases.
Key players involved
Swiss airport operator Flughafen Zürich signed a concession agreement with the Uttar Pradesh Government for the new airport in October 2020. It is responsible for the construction and management of the new greenfield airport.
Yamuna International Airport Ltd (YIAL) was formed as a special purpose vehicle by Flughafen Zürich in January 2020.
A consortium of Haptic Architects, Nordic, Grimshaw and STUP was selected for the airport design, while PwC was appointed to prepare the techno-economic feasibility (TeFR) study for the project.
Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) was the nodal authority for the airport project until Noida International airport limited (NIAL) was appointed to supervise the airport development work.
NIAL’s responsibilities include the development, land acquisition, maintenance and all other activities related to the airport.
